Successful ShakeOuts in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our Shakeout earthquake drills yesterday in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch! It was so fun learning with you all about the importance of earthquake and fire safety! We really hope you and your children enjoyed all the fun learning that went on. For those of you who couldn’t make it, here is a recap of our day!

We spent the morning meeting and greeting before we asked everyone to get out their survival kits. One by one we checked through the kits, and compared them with the GetThru survival kit checklist! Many of you actually did very well!

Then we moved onto a video, which showed the children a G-rated version of what an earthquake looks like so that they could recognise the signs of an earthquake. Recognising these signs is very important for you little one, especially if they are in a different room from you when an earthquake occurs as it is very hard to walk in one, so if they know the signs they can at least know what to do if you aren’t able to get to them. We then told the children what to do if the ground does start shaking, which is DROP, COVER, HOLD! To assist them with learning we used roleplaying and songs to help everyone remember – many studies have shown the benefits and correlations between singing and learning for children! We made up lyrics to the tunes of familiar nursery rhymes too so that the learning was familiar and fun too.

Then, once everyone was prepared, it was time to do the drill! At the first practice of the drill, the children were a little apprehensive but on the second go – it was perfect! Every dropped, covered, and held on to something just as they were supposed to!

After the success of the earthquake drill, it was time to read a story about the importance of fire safety. In the case of an earthquake, it can cause fires too so we decided to link this into the seminar. After reading the story each family drew a picture of their house and we figured out the best evacuation route for each and every home. To be learning about something so important while everyone was having so much fun was really special.

Thank you so much to everyone who came and we hope to see you at our future seminars next time! It was a very successful day as you can see from the video below of our Christchurch drill!
